Ask a Nerd Girl

We’ve finally reached the final installment of this round of “Ask a Nerd Girl!” A huge thanks to everyone who submitted a question, there were a lot of them. I’m seriously thinking about doing one of those Reddit AMA’s next time.

May the answers be ever in your favor…

***

Lucas K: Is there any property in the geek world that you hope never gets made into a feature film?

I’m ok with everything I love being made into a feature film so long as it’s made into a GOOD feature film. There’s nothing worse than watching Hollywood butcher a perfectly good nugget of nerdom.

Somer D: Are Link (Zelda) and Cloud (FFVII) related?

Well, Link is from Hyrule and Cloud is from Nibelheim, so I would say no.

Mark V: Do you think JJ Abrams should proceed with the Micronauts film? If you say “Yes” then you officially become my dream girl and I will unfortunately have to stalk you.

Oh man, that project has been in the works for soooo loooong now. I would like to see it get made.

Roger M: Have you seen “The Guild” video called “Do You Want To Date My Avatar” on YouTube….? It’s a funny video game themed MMORPG video based around the show ” The Guild “.

Yup! I’ve seen several of their videos, musical and otherwise. They are very well done.

Hanse S: What question would you most like to be asked?

Kevin W: “What question do you wish that people would ask you more often?” Once you’ve answered that, consider it asked.

How can I get involved with Operation Gratitude? The answer is HERE. By the way, I will be volunteering at the Armory in Van Nuys tomorrow (Saturday, 15 DEC 2012), packing and shipping care packages. Feel free to join me!

Christopher P: should i go with the helm of disintegration or the sword of chaos?

Are you a Paladin? If no, then go for the Helm of Disintegration if for no other reason than I like the name.

Charlie N: favorite Data moment?

That’s tough. I’m such a Spiner fan (Brent Spiner and I share the same birthday). If I have to choose, then I’m going to narrow it down to 3.

  1. Data meets Spock / Data meets McCoy – OK, I’m cheating a little here, but both are so great that I just can’t choose.
  2. Data in Generations – Data and his malfunctioning emotion chip were arguably the best part of the movie. But my favorite is his “oh shit!” moment when the saucer section is about to crash. It never fails to make me LOL.
  3. Data’s death in Nemesis – I almost went with Riker’s death by Data’s cat poetry as my 3rd choice (seriously, sooo funny) or Lal’s death, but I’m a sucker for conclusions and, while I hope it doesn’t really mark the end of our favorite positronic lifeform, I cried the ugly cry when Data died. I have weird TV/movie psychic abilities and I could tell he was going to die about 15 minutes into the film. I literally starting sobbing 15 minutes into the movie. I was with about 10 other people, all guy friends, and they all simultaneously looked at me in complete horror. One of them leaned over and asked if I was ok. I didn’t want to give anything away so I nodded that I was. I don’t think he believed me hahaha. When the time came they all understood what was going on and they couldn’t believe that I’d seen it coming from that far off. At any rate, it was very emotional for me so it had to be on the list.

Rusty B: What form of FTL do you prefer. Star Trek, BSG, Star Wars, …..?

I like Warp Drive. I like the core, I like the nacelles, and I like the way Picard says “Engage!”

Madhatter M: What’s your favorite video game?

I’m old school. I LOVE original Mario Brothers. Like, crazy love.

Dennis Q: What makes Colorforms stick?

Static cling.

Eric W: If Hans Solo and Capt Kirk got into a fight, who would win? No weapons. Just hand to hand combat.

Rene F: Kirk or Solo ultimate badass??

Tough one!! Both fight a lot and have a knack for getting in and out of sticky situations. Hrmmmm……I think this needs to be settled with an arm wrestling contest between William Shatner and Harrison Ford.

Jarrad T: Who would you get to star in The Heir to the Empire Trilogy?

A lot of people seem to think Nathan Fillion should take on the role of Han. I think that, if anyone could, it’s him, so why not? I should play Leia (duh). This might sound a little out there, but what about Joseph Gorden-Levitt as Luke? Billy Crudup has been blue once before, why not again as Thrawn? Christina Hendricks as Mara.

Koa L: Who’s your favorite lead or captain in a Star Trek series? Captain Picard, Captain Kirk, Captain Janeway, C.O. Sisko, or the captain of that horrible spin off Archer?

A lot of people seem to forget that Sisko was promoted to Captain in Season 3, but I digress. I will never, ever be able to answer this question because I love them all for different reasons. I want to be bff’s with Kirk, serve under Picard, play baseball with Sisko, be Janeway’s favorite niece, and steal Archer’s puppy (actually, I would rather Leap with him but that’s a different series).

Xavier S: Video Games to films, Good, Bad, and the UGLY?

The Resident Evil films fit into all three of those categories.

David P: Who do your base are now belong to?

I’m sorry; I don’t understand the question…? Rephrase and ask me again and I’ll update the blog with an actual answer.

Dean Z: What is your favorite all time Sci-Fi character. I know that’s almost impossible but u only get 1

You’re right, that’s impossible to answer.

Gary S: Why didn’t Admiral Adama have a cool chair to sit in while commanding Galactica, like Kirk and Picard had?

Because Ronald D. Moore wanted to make Battlestar Galactica the opposite of Star Trek. He succeeded.

Frnsc I: why did they change WH40k rules? i like when i made blow stuff with a 5 .. what you think? XD

Sorry, I don’t play Warhammer 40k.

David P: When you succeed at something challenging what victory music from what video game do you think of?

My life is a musical. Seriously. I literally walk around all day singing snippets of songs when I hear certain words or phrases or find myself in various situations. Not only that, but half the time I sing the wrong words. It’s kind of ridiculous. But I’m told that it’s endearing and I’m a creature of habit so I won’t be changing any time soon 😉

Jebbie S: What do you look for in a fanboy?

A great sense of humor is key. I need to laugh, early and often, otherwise I get bored. I like to go on adventures but I also need to be left alone to read and write and watch reruns of my favorite TV shows.

Mike F: Your thoughts on the Doctor Who minisode and trailer for the Christmas special?

Taylor W: that was my question….dammit 🙁

So excited!! Can’t wait to learn more about the new Companion. She was fantastic as Oswin.

David P: What should the next big nerd fanbase tv show that is cancelled way before its time be about?

I would say Wonder Woman but that didn’t even make it past the pilot.

Matthew B: Which Zork game was your favorite?

Zork was a bit before my time, I’m afraid.

Miguel S: halo 4 or assassin creed 3

I have bad wrist problems so I very rarely play video games. When I do it’s on systems with smaller controllers.

David F: I have two questions, 1st my best friend in the world is a big nerd girl addicted to Hunger Games books, are there any other book series like the games books that you would suggest? And 2nd who is your favorite male X-Men character? Mine is Wolverine.

The City of Embers, Temeraire, Ender’s Game, Divergent, I Am Number Four, Graceling, A Discovery of Witchesand if she hasn’t read them yet, Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings are must reads. Those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head right now…

Ugh. I’m so bad with these “what’s your favorite” questions! I love Wolverine. He’s the epitome of badass. I’ve always had a bit of a thing for Gambit though.

Todd C: What is your quest? Do you like Monty Python?

To seek the Holy Grail.

Of course 🙂

David K: When we finally see the Higgs Boson, will this be the key to unlock Transporting technology?

I think that it’s the key to more than we could possibly imagine. If it’s proven to exist, that is.

Marc W: Guybrush Threepwood? Would the HNG do a photo shoot of Monkey Island?

Sure! I’ll look into it and see if I can put something together.

Cash F: At the end of Battlestar Galactica. Did it blow your mind those events took place 150,000 years ago?

Yes and no. The whole think with Starbuck was way more of a mindfuck for me. What the hell was she anyways??

This is exactly what I thought after watching the entire series: http://hotnerdgirl.com/2011/05/11/25-take-aways-a-battlestar-galactica-wrap-up/

Jason S: Eddie S. stole my question, so I’m going to ask this one:
What would you do to get a job working in a Hotel that is in orbit around the Earth?

Fill out an application I suppose.

Christopher E: Are you ever in Montreal and do you like Cajun food…..I own a restaurant there. Oh. And Favorite STNG episode?

I’ve never been but I would love to go! I don’t have much experience with Cajun food to be honest. But I’m always willing to try something new.

I have so many favorites but “The Inner Light” will always have a special place in my heart.

Scott P: Hey HNG. Thanks for taking the time to checkout my question.
Who would win in a fair, no specialty, race. Millennium Falcon, Serenity, or NCC 1701 (original movie Enterprise)? All ships are considered “carrier personnel ships I would think. Again. No hyper drives or warp speeds of any kind. I thought this one up the other day while watching the NHRA finals. Hope to hear from you soon. Scott

So, no FTL, eh? My first instinct was to go with the Millennium Falcon on this one but then I thought about how the Enterprise’s impulse engines alone take it almost to light speed. So I’m going with the Enterprise.

Kevin R: Hi hot nerd girl – This is a submission for ‘ask a nerd girl a question’. I’m pretty bummed out lately – got laid off, broke, moved back in with parents, etc. My question is, are there any amazing fantasy/sci-fi books or movies you can recommend that are uplifting, inspiring, life-affirming, etc.? Something to help give me motivation and fortitude to get back on my feet. I recently tore through Patrick Rothfuss‘s books, as well as most of the Dresden Files and George R.R. Martin‘s stuff (which is NOT uplifting, though is rad). Thanks!!

I find Star Trek to be very uplifting and positive. You don’t say if you’ve read the Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings books, but those have happy endings, as do the movies. Some others off the top of my head: Stardust, Willow, Wall-E, Princess Bride, Neverending Story, Secret of NIMH, Hook, Ever After, The Fifth Element, The Goonies. A lot of those are “kid” movies, but they are the most positive and uplifting ones that I can think of.

I hope that things get better soon. I’m sending you some good chi.

Robby M: My question: Would you like a revamp on your art? The reason I ask, is I’ve been following you on facebook for a little while now, and I enjoy a lot of your posts. I find it really unfortunate that the photoshop work on your site is lacking.. I have 4 years of solid photoshop experience, and I’d love to help you with some composites, or even a new layout design. Don’t mean to sound rude, just a friendly offer. 🙂 Keep up the geektastic work!

Ha! I kind of like the way my friend just cuts and pastes, it’s kind of become a signature look for the page lol. But send me some of your work; I’d love to check it out.

Tommy J: What can we do to get The Legend Of The Seeker series started back up???

There is a website dedicated to just this: http://www.saveourseeker.com/

I don’t know what the status of the campaign is currently but they have an active Twitter account: https://twitter.com/saveourseeker

I would also recommend writing to the SyFy execs since it was largely thanks to their deal falling through that led to its cancellation.

Don P: If you were casting the Highlander remake not sure if Reynolds can pull off the accent and sell “There can be only one!” line. But who would you cast as Ramirez, Banderas? And how about the Kurgan, Ron Perlman?

I like Ryan Reynolds but he probably shouldn’t even try to attempt the Scottish accent. He could prove me wrong and nail it but I get the feeling that accents aren’t his forte. I’d rather hear his normal voice than a truly awful Scottish accent, especially since it’s my favorite accent ever.

Ron Perlman would be fantastic as The Kurgan!! He was on the TV show as The Messenger. By the way, if you haven’t seen La cité des enfants perdus (The City of Lost Children), you should, it’s brilliant. Ray Stevenson would be good too.

Replacing Sean Connery is tougher. Banderas would do a fine job, I’m sure, but I don’t know that he would live up to Connery’s Ramirez. One of the few people who have done it is Daniel Craig. Though his blue eyes aren’t very Egyptian-like. Stellan Skarsgard, Javier Bardem, Liam Neeson, Ralph Fiennes, Jeremy Irons, or Josh Brolin would all do nicely as well I would imagine.

Ryan C: Ever considered auditioning for a guest role on Star Trek: New Voyages?

I would love to if I got the opportunity.

Kevin K: Question the first…Any great sci-fi book/movie/comic/story provides an idea of what the future will be like. Be it tech, a utopian society, or other, what does your future look like, and when can we see it?

Bonus question: What is the one tech from any sci-fi you would like to see realized? (i.e. Tickle laser gun, transporter, phone booth) Ready, Go!

As always, I love you column! And yes, you do need to make shirts/hoodies/etc. I can’t keep sporting homemade HNG gear 😉 I cross my heart, I will wear some HGN during my next tough mudder/spartan run if you do.

I know that I probably sound like a broken record lol, but when I picture the future, I honestly picture it being like Star Trek. And that’s not just because it’s my favorite franchise of all time. It’s because it’s the one that I want to become true. I love watching TV shows and movies like Battlestar GalacticaAlien, 2001: A Space Odyssey, etc etc etc. but OMFG I would not want to actually live them. How horrible would that be?! Star Trek shows our ultimate potential. Sure, we might have to endure a little nuclear war to get there, but I’m hopeful that, in real life, we can avoid such details and still come out as better human beings.

Part of me really wants to say Transporters because it would be so awesome to travel from one side of the planet to the other in just a few seconds, but if I’m going to be practical, then I need a Replicator. I can’t cook to save my soul and a Replicator would make my life so much easier and better.

Haha, I’m working on the t-shirts 🙂 It’s tough to find the time when you work a full-time job and write a blog and other writing projects and a home life that needs tending to. But it will happen (hopefully very soon).

THAT’S IT FOR THIS ROUND. THANKS AGAIN!

  1. If my question wasn’t answered, is it because I didn’t post it in the proper forum, or because it wasn’t a nerd question? It was about twitter… Thanks

    1. hotnerdgirl says:

There are only two reasons why your question wouldn’t have been answered. The 1st is if I didn’t see it for some reason. If that’s the case, then I apologize. People were posting in multiple places and I tried to collect and answer them all. The 2nd reason is if it was posted after the deadline. If it was posted after midnight on Friday, November 16th then, I’m sorry, it didn’t get answered. What’s your question?

      1. jsbrewster1 says:

Hi, I appreciate your quick reply. My question is whether or not you like Twitter. Not if you use it, but if you like it, and why or why not. I struggle to see the appeal of it, and wanted to get your thoughts. Thank you.

        1. hotnerdgirl says:

I do not like Twitter. I guess because I just don’t get the point of it. I used to have the facebook page connected to Twitter so anything I posted on fb automatically went to Twitter. That was pretty awesome cause I didn’t have to pay attention to it. But at some point they stopped allowing that so I’m having to go there more frequently. Usually I’ll just copy and paste a few of the things I post to the fb page onto Twitter. It’s lame.

          1. jsbrewster1 says:

Yay! I always worried that it was just me, wrong generation or out of touch with the ‘in’ crowd, or as my daughter would put it, ‘the cool kids’. It’s nice to know Twitter doesn’t appeal to you either.

  2. dennymclean says:

    Dear David P,

I think you know that she has no chance to survive, make her time. Ha,ha,ha (ha).

Yeah, I’ve obviously never played that video game lol
